What is AcuDetox?

AcuDetox is the original name for what is now commonly referred to as 5NP (5 Needle Protocol). This is an ear acupuncture treatment with experiential evidence supporting its effectiveness in alleviating psychological and substance related symptoms.

Benefits are subjective and differ from person to person yet generally have included:

Reduction in anxiety
Improved sleep
Reduction in drug and sugar cravings
Reduction in withdrawal symptoms
Increased focus or energy.

Risks are minimal and may include discomfort upon insertion (pinch sensation) that quickly dissipates or can be eased with adjustments or removal. There are no known diagnostic contraindications to participating in 5NP.

$5 Extra Fee

If at any time you would like to receive AcuDetox during your session, the fee is $5 in addition to your regular session charge. AcuDetox is voluntary and can be requested with written consent at any in-person therapy session.

Historical Use of AcuDetox

Acupuncture has been effectively used for centuries and AcuDetox is not new to the United States, however, the practitioners who could administer it was more restricted until recently. Since the 1970’s heroine epidemic, AcuDetox had primarily been used in addiction treatment. As experiential evidence grew, it was found to be effective in times of crisis and in response to trauma. It has since been used in the aftermath of 9-11, hurricanes Katrina and Harvey, and in response to the Texas Hill Country flood of 2025.

Training Involved

Laura completed training and supervised experience through 5NP Texas, a program that teaches the NADA Protocol and is recognized by the Texas Medical Board. She became licensed as an AcuDetox Specialist (ADS) in December 2025. Her training focused on clean needling techniques, universal safety precautions, hands-on practice, and understanding of the ideologies and mysteries inherent in the treatment.
