Self-harm refers to intentionally hurting yourself as a way of coping with overwhelming emotions, distress, numbness, or painful experiences. While self-harm can be dangerous and requires support, it does not always mean a person wants to die. Suicidal thinking involves thoughts about ending your life, not wanting to be alive, or feeling unable to continue with emotional pain. Both experiences are serious and deserve compassionate, professional support.
Self-harm is often a response to intense emotional pain, trauma, overwhelming stress, or difficulty expressing and managing emotions. Some people use self-harm as a way to release emotional distress, feel something when they feel numb, regain a sense of control, or communicate pain that feels difficult to put into words. Therapy can help uncover the underlying needs and develop safer coping strategies.
Suicidal thoughts can develop when emotional pain feels unbearable, hopelessness takes over, or a person feels trapped without a way forward. Trauma, depression, anxiety, major life stressors, grief, relationship struggles, and feelings of isolation can all contribute. Having these thoughts is a sign that support is needed, and therapy can provide a space to address the pain beneath them.
Therapy for self-harm and suicidal thinking focuses on creating safety, understanding the root causes of distress, and building healthier ways to cope. Treatment may include developing emotional regulation skills, identifying triggers, strengthening coping strategies, processing trauma, challenging hopeless thoughts, and creating a personalized safety plan. A trauma-informed approach helps clients feel supported while working toward healing.
I understand that these symptoms often reflect deep emotional pain and experiences that have felt overwhelming or unsafe. Through a supportive and nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship, I help clients understand their experiences, build effective coping skills, reconnect with hope, and develop a greater sense of safety and self-worth.
