Parts Work is a therapeutic approach that recognizes we all have different “parts” or aspects of ourselves that hold different emotions, beliefs, memories, and ways of responding to life. Approaches such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Ego State Therapy explore these parts with curiosity and compassion, helping clients better understand themselves and heal from painful experiences.
No. Having different parts is a normal human experience. We all have different sides of ourselves that show up in different situations—such as a part that wants to protect us, a part that feels afraid, or a part that strives to succeed. Parts Work does not mean you are “crazy”; it is a way of understanding the complexity of your emotions, behaviors, and inner experiences.
Our parts often develop for a reason. Some parts protect us from pain, help us cope with difficult experiences, or carry important strengths and values. Even parts that create challenges may have positive intentions underneath. Learning to understand and work with your parts can increase self-compassion, emotional awareness, and a greater sense of balance within yourself.
In therapy, Parts Work helps you explore the different aspects of yourself with curiosity rather than judgment. Together, you can identify protective patterns, understand where certain reactions come from, and support parts that may still carry past wounds or trauma. This process can help you develop greater self-trust, emotional regulation, and a stronger connection with your authentic self.
As a trauma and anxiety specialist, I use parts work to help clients explore the protective patterns, emotions, and beliefs that developed throughout their lives. Together, we create space to understand the parts of you that may feel overwhelmed, fearful, perfectionistic, disconnected, or constantly on alert.
