Dissociation

Back to Specialties

Trauma-informed therapy serving Sugar Land, Houston, and across Texas.

Dissociation is a natural response where a person feels disconnected from their thoughts, emotions, memories, body, or surroundings. It exists on a spectrum. Mild dissociation may look like daydreaming, “spacing out,” or feeling detached during stressful moments. More intense dissociation can involve feeling disconnected from yourself (depersonalization), feeling like the world around you is unreal (derealization), memory gaps, or feeling as though different parts of yourself are disconnected.

Dissociation often develops as a protective response to overwhelming stress, trauma, or experiences that felt unsafe. When emotions or situations become too much to process, the nervous system may create distance from those experiences as a way to cope. While dissociation can be helpful in the moment, it can become disruptive when it continues to impact daily life, relationships, or your sense of connection with yourself.

With the right support, many people experience significant improvement in dissociative symptoms. Healing does not always mean dissociation disappears completely; instead, therapy can help you understand your triggers, feel more present, strengthen your connection with yourself, and develop healthier ways for your nervous system to respond to stress.

Therapy for dissociation focuses on creating safety, increasing awareness, and helping you reconnect with yourself in a gradual and supportive way. Treatment may include grounding techniques, nervous system regulation, trauma processing, exploring emotional patterns, and building internal stability. A trauma-informed approach ensures that healing happens at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

I have unique education and experience working with individuals who have experienced disruptive dissociation. I understand how these experiences are connected to the nervous system’s response to overwhelming situations. I gently help clients explore the root of their dissociative symptoms while building safety, self-awareness, and connection. Through individualized therapy, I can support clients in feeling more grounded, present, and empowered in their lives.
